- Concepts of deviance & supportive evidence derived from social
- learning, differential association, social control, & containment
- theories were drawn on to explore variance in adolescent sexual
- behavior & to construct an integrative theoretical model, using
- anonymous questionnaire data collected from 1,496 students in grades
- 7-12 in 10 private schools. Hierarchical regression procedures
- demonstrated that sociodemographics accounted for 15% of the total
- variance in sexual intercourse participation; theoretical factors
- explained 29%. Multivariate analyses revealed the most predictive of
- 16 theoretical factors was differential peer association (66%).
- Factors derived from control theory accounted for less than 1%, & no
- support was found for containment theory. The explanatory model
- proposed is based on the assumption that it is the joint occurrence of
- weak familial bonding & differential peer association that maximizes
- the probability of sexual exploration. Further research is needed to
- test the model with appropriate path analytic procedures in other data
- sets. 1 Table, 63 References. V. Wagener (Copyright 1992, Sociological
